Gorgeous Esher demolition & Rebuild!

We take a look back at this 2017 project which featured on Channel 4's Inside Outside Homes programme.

Today we recall our involvement in the Channel 4 programme Inside Out Homes. Our clients originally approached us with an extension enquiry which soon evolved into a whole house demolition and rebuild using Kingspan TEK™ (SIPS) Structural Insulated Panel Systems.

They demolished their existing 4 bedroom home to build something truly special. Resident Architect Zac Monro from Zac Monro Architects passionately created a simply stunning design and Point1 Building Systems designed, supplied, manufactured and erected the superstructure for the SIPS project.

Constructed with speed and precision Point1 Building Systems Ltd used their expertise as an established Kingspan TEK™ delivery partner to build the new home which boasts spacious open spans requiring some challenging structure to achieve the airy, open plan vibe of its living areas. The design is all about simplicity and harmony with nature where the interior finishes spill out into the welcoming garden - embracing the family's enjoyment of al fresco dining and entertaining. In addition to this a side extension crowned with a lush sedum roof merges effortlessly with the rest of the building and the landscape around it.

From box room to Battlefield - Point1 Building Systems reaches a ten year milestone.

Point1 Building Systems became a Kingspan TEK™ Delivery Partner in 2013. From its early beginnings in the box room of Garrys house to a subsequent location in Burton-on-Trent when later the business put down solid roots in Shrewsbury. In 2018, they established their own premises in Knights Park, which is situated on the Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury.

Since its inception, Point1 Building Systems has successfully supplied and installed over 200 projects across the UK. These projects include a variety of new homes of differing size and design, including several Passivhaus developments, as well as commercial and educational projects. The company prides itself on its commitment to high-quality workmanship and complete client satisfaction.

The company's directors, Garry Dyke and Nick Jones, have extensive backgrounds in the building and construction industry. Garry has more than 30 years of experience, starting from the shop floor and working his way up to become a builders' merchant manager. His involvement with building systems began with designing and selling floor joist systems, eventually leading a design team. In 2004, Garry started working with Kingspan and recognized the significant performance benefits of TEK, an offsite manufactured building system. Kingspan subsequently opened a manufacturing facility in Yorkshire and established a delivery partner network. Seeing the opportunity, Garry founded Point1 Building Systems, which became a Kingspan Delivery Partner from its inception.

Nick, is a qualified joiner and carpenter with over 20 plus years of experience in on-site woodworking and modern construction methods, particularly SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) and timber frame technologies. He worked for a timber frame manufacturer before joining Kingspan's design and management department, where he expanded his understanding of SIPs' structural and thermal capabilities. After four years of working together, Nick and Garry joined forces in 2014 to establish Point1 Building Systems.

It's a reflection of hard work and dedication that has seen the team progress from just Nick and Garry to the 10 strong team we are today working from our base in Battlefield, Shrewsbury. To achieve this, over the years they have expanded the team with experienced in-house contract and project managers, as well as construction professionals and tradesmen who work closely with the company on a sub-contract basis. Tight project control is maintained to ensure the delivery of exceptional results not only with the projects we build but with the business Point1 runs.

Why does Building an energy efficient home save on costs?

The overall build time is significantly fast tracked due to the panellised system used for construction, follow on trades can start much sooner because the shell, once wrapped in a breather membrane is weathertight and speeds-up hitting those milestones that would be otherwise delayed. When engaging with a Kingspan TEK delivery partner it is much easier to predict project completion times due to the certainty of using the off site construction process.

The completed building reduces the amount of energy needed to heat and cool the home which can result in lower monthly utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint. Energy-efficient features such as hi-efficiency insulation, high performance windows and doors along with an MVHR system and the use of renewable energy sources can help to achieve this. Additionally, an energy-efficient home can also increase its resale value because it is seen as a more sustainable and cost-effective living option.

By reducing the amount of heat lost in the winter while retaining it in the summer building a SIPS house contributes to a stable indoor temperature. Energy efficient features such a high insulation levels, airtight construction and efficient heating and cooling systems help to regulate the indoor climate, making it more comfortable for occupants, improving air quality further and enhancing the overall internal comfort of the home.

POINT1 Building Systems have recently been awarded ‘ STA Assure Gold ’ The STA’s highest achievement level, and at our first attempt too! Our auditors awarded us an amazing 94% compliance level overall.

The audit was a very in-depth analysis of our entire business processes, from factory production control, control of documents, resource planning, and control processes….to design, engineering and development, control of non-conformance, purchasing, production and service provision, measurement, analysis and improvement, control of site installation, H&S and course Site Safe.

This is, of course, a team effort, and we are proud that the POINT1 team continue to strive for excellence. This level of care and quality has been duly recognised via this accreditation, and we look forward to helping inspire people to build more sustainably.
